“I think his best position is number 10. I don’t think he’s got the speed to play out wide. I’m not sure this Liverpool team is set and ready for Wirtz to come and thrive.

“If Liverpool can get Barcola, Isak, Muñoz, Rio and Ekitike all firing and fit, then Wirtz will feel better because he will have more forward runs and better players around him.

“His confidence is shot. He’s not playing well enough. I agree with Jamie Carragher to that extent. But I think the boy needs help from the manager, the players and his senior players. He’s a major talent in my opinion.

“I think sometimes, if everyone is available, maybe he does need to come out of the team and have a couple of games on the bench. Sometimes watching the team and being gutted that someone else is thriving in your position, that little bit of fear, could help Florian Wirtz.

“He needs to do more, but I see a player there. I wouldn’t be giving up on him just yet.”
