FSG announces strategic minority investment in Liverpool FC

Fenway Sports Group have issued the following statement regarding strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), a global sports, media, entertainment, and real estate company, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of a minority equity stake in Liverpool F.C. to 1892 Holdings, a consortium led and managed by Amit Bhatia, with investments from Amit Bhatia and the Mittal Family Trusts, K5 Sports (a K5 Global Fund), with Jeff Bezos as the lead investor in the K5 Sports fund, and EE Capital, the family office of Elaine and Eduardo Saverin.

The strategic investment supports Liverpool F.C.’s long-term growth ambitions by bringing together experts from across global business, technology, and investment. The consortium partners will work with FSG and the club’s leadership team to evaluate opportunities that enhance the club’s objectives on and off the pitch. FSG continues to retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool F.C.

Mike Gordon, FSG President, said: “Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind. That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world. Amit Bhatia is to become Liverpool’s new vice-chairman and take a place on the board in return for a minority stake in the 20-times English football champions.

Amit Bhatia is to be joined on an expanded board by Elaine Saverin, the wife of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and Bryan Baum, who is representing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos rather than Bezos becoming a board member himself.

Sources with knowledge of the investment, speaking anonymously as they weren’t authorised to do so publicly, indicate there will be no change to the leadership or day-to-day operation of the club.

There is no commitment beyond that from FSG to sell a greater shareholding to Bhatia’s 1892 Holdings company, but the transaction documents provide options and flexibility for how a relationship may evolve over time, which effectively means that Bhatia would be in the driving seat to purchase a larger shareholding should FSG wish to sell more of the club in the future.

Given the Etihad deal likely pays Man City comfortably in excess of £100m per annum - following significant back-and-forth between them and the Premier League - it would be entirely defensible for Amazon to provide £100m or more for LFC's ftont-of-shirt sponsorship deal.
