Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme says Jürgen Klopp will become head coach if he wins Sunday’s election. He plans to send Raúl to speak with Klopp.

However, Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke tells @Plettigoal:

Bayern made enquries about a potential move for Rio Ngumoha, but sources have indicated that no face-to-face discussions have taken place.

NO AGREEMENT over personal terms has been struck between Bayern and the player.

Sources close to Liverpool insist Ngumoha is not available and is viewed as an important member of the first team who operates in a position they are trying to strengthen.

No final decision over Slot’s future would be taken until after Hughes and Edwards had conducted a full review which lent heavily on data, but sources with knowledge of the situation have told The Athletic that the landscape shifted in the week building up to the final game of the season at home against Brentford — with Iraola at the forefront of Liverpool’s thinking.

The backdrop had been a dismal 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa when Slot’s side fell apart. Hughes had been present at the previous home game against Chelsea when Slot was the subject of boos from an Anfield crowd fuming over such a passive, error-strewn display.

In the final week of the season, Hughes and Iraola chatted informally. While there is no suggestion any job offer was made — or even floated — at this time, it made sense for Iraola to leave his options open with the situation at Liverpool in flux. The Spaniard was also receiving advice from friends to bide his time amid Palace’s strong interest.

Senior FSG figures are adamant that the decision to sack Slot was only taken five days after the 1-1 draw with Brentford and that it was one that all involved wrestled with given the mitigating factors for the team’s struggles.

There was a meeting on Friday, May 29 where Hughes and Edwards delivered their recommendation to terminate the Dutchman’s two-year reign. It was approved by owners John W. Henry, Tom Werner and Mike Gordon.

Hughes was tasked with delivering the news to Slot the following morning ahead of an official lunchtime announcement. The former Feyenoord boss was shocked, having believed that salvaging Champions League qualification would earn him the opportunity to put things right.

Liverpool’s hierarchy had concluded that the downward spiral had gone too far. They felt that if they didn’t make the change and the next season started badly the mood could quickly turn toxic. After witnessing a loss of identity over the course of 2025-26, they wanted to see a change in playing style.

Once they opted to make the change, it was always going to be Iraola.

Lens’ Pierre Sage and Sebastian Hoeness, the Stuttgart manager, were admired but never formally contacted, and while there was social media speculation over a possible romantic return for Jurgen Klopp, that was never on the table and neither was his opinion sought over the process.

Liverpool were all in on Iraola. With Hughes leading the process and Iraola available and keen to take over, negotiations proved straightforward. A verbal agreement was in place by Tuesday, with Iraola flying in to complete the formalities less than 48 hours later.

Christian Eriksen, the Danish footballer, was taken off the pitch during an international friendly with Ukraine after collapsing, five years after he suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's match against Ukraine earlier today, but the Danish Football Association has confirmed that he is now conscious.

The game was halted during the 65th minute when Eriksen collapsed and was abandoned shortly after. The 34-year-old able to walk from the field.

Denmark's national team doctor Morten Boesen said: "

"Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself.

"As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.

"He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident."
