Jackson grew up in the Techwood Homes projects in Atlanta. He said he didn’t know it at the time, but Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, lived in those same projects 20 years earlier.
Jackson said his father left when he was 9 months old, and his mother was an alcoholic. “I never saw her take a drink where she didn’t pass out,” he said.
At the age of 12, his mother passed out while driving their car. He had to take over and drive them home, he said, and that was the final straw. With the help of a disabled uncle, Jackson approached the Division of Family and Children Services and became a foster child.
